PORT DICKSON: Five independent candidates for the Port Dickson by-election including former Negri Sembilan mentri besar Tan Sri Mohd Isa Abdul Samad lost their deposits.
Election Commission (EC) chairman Azhar Azizan Harun said Mohd Isa Abdul Samad, Mohd Saiful Bukhari Azlan, Lau Seck Yan, Stevie Chan Keng Leong and Kan Chee Yuen who were contesting under independent tickets lost RM10,000 after failing to secure one-eighth of the total votes.
He said only PAS candidate, Lt Kol (Rtd) Mohd Nazari Mokhtar and the winner Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim did not lose the deposit as they acquired 7,456 votes and 31,016 votes.
Meanwhile, Azhar also stressed that the EC will revise the election rules to ensure the smooth running of the election process in the future.
He said certain existing rules were unclear and needed to be tightened up.
“Some people have complained about campaigning activities which falls in the grey area. So, we want the existing rules to be looked into and improvements can be made so that it can be easily understood in the future,” he said.
He was speaking at a press conference at the Port Dickson Municipal Council Hall (MPPD) here.
He, however, said he was satisfied with the progress of the Port Dickson by-election although it had failed to hit the 70% voters turnout target.
