Give us a month to finalise GLC generals – CM

Shafie Apdal

KOTA KINABALU: Give the Warisan-led government about another month to finalize its surprising list of government-linked company (GLC) generals, said Datuk Seri Mohd Shafie Apdal.

The Chief Minister revealed whilst change in the line-up is imminent, some of the effective heads that could help with the betterment of the people with the right merits would be maintained in Sabah.

“In life it is not going to be easy. When you take over the government, you know there will be generals along there. You can’t kill all the generals. You know they have vast experience, some of them. You can’t change all the heads but of course, you have to have good leadership in certain parts of the GLC and the government to ensure that they have the right mindset to support the current government,” he said.

“That will be done. I think give us a while. It will be less than a month, hopefully, and there will be some surprises. One good example is the Water Department. I know it is a bold move that we have done. There is an outcry but I have spelt it out. I think it is not the officers that we want, the public at large want ample supply of clean water, treated water to be there, available to them and that is more important than anything else.

“But how can we realize that? We can only realize that if you have efficient people with the know-how and expertise and it must be based on merit. You know when you get somebody to run an organization it must be based on merit, it cannot be based on race because they were there, (can)not (be based on) race, not diligent. I am quite sure actually with the right person, people on board that will be good for the people at large and the state too,” he explained.

Shafie was responding to a reporter’s question regarding some of the disgruntled voices on the ground due to the late appointment of GLC heads.

He urged the people to give the government time as the tangles from the previous administration cannot “unwind overnight”.

“There are high expectations on the line down there but we have to get many more professionals to run, not only GLCs but other outfits too,” he elaborated.
