Penang to install CCTV cameras to monitor watersports operators

GEORGE TOWN: Penang will install CCTV cameras along the Batu Ferringhi beachfront to monitor the activities of watersports' operators.

This is part of the state's initiative to upgrade the security and safety standards along the scenic coastline, said state Local Government committee chairperson Jagdeep Singh Deo.

According to him, the Penang City Council (MBPP) will also increase patrol frequencies in the area, besides recruiting state civil defence volunteers to comb the beachfront.

“Most of the offences detected in the past occurred because the watersports operators were illegals. We have now ensured that everyone operating the services are legal and the tourists can ask for verification,” Jagdeep told the state legislative assembly sitting here.

He said that the meteorological services department also needs to improve their surveillance to help the state cope with the rough weather due to climate change.

Jagdeep said that in the major floods last November, there were four deaths in his Datuk Keramat state constituency because the warning of severe weather was late in being issued.

He hoped that with Pakatan Harapan now ruling the federal government, the meteorological services can be improved.
