LANGKAWI: Within the span of the next few hours, the island resort will attempt a historic evening half-marathon for the first time ever as part of efforts to promote Langkawi as a leading destination for meetings, incentives, conferences and exhibitions (MICE).
The event is called “Runkawi” and it is the brainchild of Tunku Laksamana Kedah Tunku Datuk Shazuddin Ariff Sultan Sallehuddin.
The Langkawi Development Authority (Lada)'s chief executive officer Datuk Azizan Noordin said that the event, billed as a friendly run, would begin at 6pm and end around 9pm tonight near the Century Resort Langkasuka area here.
An estimated 2,000 participants are expected to take part in the marathon.
Tunku Shazuddin said the organisers are hoping that it would become a signature recreational sporting event for the island resort.
The event will be divided into three run categories – the 21km, the 10km and the 5km fun ride.
It is tailored to be a family run, but there are prizes of up to RM3,000 for the winning participants.
The route of the marathon will take participants through scenic padi fields and rustic village homes.
Azizan said that recreational sports formed the majority of the 33 events organised to promote MICE and tourism in Langkawi.
Tropical Charters Sdn Bhd's chief executive officer Datuk Alexander Issac said that such events can create spin-offs for the local travel trade members to capitalise on, in terms of food catering, tours and accommodation.
