Argentinian referee Pitana appointed for World Cup final

Moscow (dpa) – Argentinian Nestor Pitana, who refereed the opening match of the World Cup, will take charge of the final on Sunday between France and Croatia. Pitana, 43, is the second Argentinian following Horacio Elizondo in 2006 to referee a World Cup final.

It will be Pitana's fifth match at the tournament in Russia, which began with host Russia's 5-0 victory over Saudi Arabia in the opening match on June 14. His last also involved France in the quarter-final 2-0 victory over Uruguay.

Iranian referee Alireza Faghani is in charge of the match for third place on Saturday in St Petersburg between England and Belgium.
