Youth drowns at Sungai Kedondong waterfall

KUALA LUMPUR: A teenage boy who was taking a dip with his friend at the Sungai Kedondong waterfall, Batang Kali, Jalan Ulu Yam-Genting, Selangor, drowned after being dragged into a whirlpool, Thursday evening.

Fire and Rescue Department Operation Commander, assistant superintendent Kamil Hamadan, said the victim, Muhammad Shazwan Norhan, 19, who was bathing with his friend, Muhammad Hanif Ikhwan Sabarudin, failed to save himself when the whirlpool occurred.

“The department received a call at 4.42pm and immediately deployed 11 firefighters with two engines to the scene which arrived about 10 minutes later.

“During the incident, Muhammad Shazwan could not save himself. His friend, who was also in the waterfall when the vortex occurred, was saved by firemen,” he said when contacted by Bernama here yesterday.

He said the two victims with six other men arrived at the waterfall from Kapar, Klang at noon yesterday for a swim.

He said the victim's body was taken to the Kuala Kubu Baru Hospital in Selangor for a post-mortem. — Bernama
